SOURCES OF DRUG

There are six (6) sources of drug

1. Plant source

2. Animal source

3. Mineral/Earth source

4. Microbiological

5. Semi synthetic/synthetic source

6. Recombination DNA technology.

• Plant sources: 

• Is the oldest source of drugs

• Most of the drugs in ancient times were derived from plant

• Almost all parts of the plants are used i.e leaves, stem, bark, fruits and roots e.g Tobacco leaves give Nicotine, Atropa belladonna gives atropine.

• Animal sources:

• Pancreas is a source of insulin, used in treatment for Diatetes

• Urine of pregnant women give human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) used for   infertility

• Blood of Animals is used in preparation of vaccines.

• Mineral sources: 

Metallic and non metallic source 

• Iron is used in treatment of iron deficiency aneamia

• Zinc is used as zinc supplement
