Common instructions for different types of scans
Explain the Procedure
Tell the patient what the scan is for and what you will do.
Check for Allergies or Conditions
Ask about pregnancy (if scanning a woman), past surgeries, or pain.
Give Clear Instructions
Tell the patient if they need to fast, drink water, or empty their bladder.
Position the Patient Correctly
Each scan type has a position: lying down, turning to the side, etc.
Apply the Gel
Put ultrasound gel on the area to help the probe send and receive sound.
Scan Type
Instructions
Abdominal
No food for 6–8 hours before scan
Pelvic (female)
Drink 1–2 liters of water 1 hour before, don’t urinate
Obstetric
Same as pelvic (if early stage)
Cardiac
Relaxed breathing, no fasting
Vascular (Legs/Arms)
No special prep
Thyroid/Neck
No food or drink needed
Be kind and professional
Keep the room quiet and comfortable
Maintain patient privacy
