How to understand the images on the screen
The 4 main probe movements
How to correctly position the probe
How to read left and right, top and bottom of the scan
When using an ultrasound, the probe has a marker (a small bump or light). This marker helps you know what part of the body is being shown on the screen.
Probe Marker Direction
What Appears on the Screen
Toward patient's head
Top of screen = head side
Toward patient’s feet
Top = foot side
Toward patient's right
Left of screen = patient's right side
Toward patient’s left
Left of screen = patient's left side
Always match the probe direction with what you want to see!
Sliding – Move the whole probe along the skin (side to side or up and down).
Tilting (Angling) – Keep probe in one spot but tilt it to see deeper or different angles.
Rotating – Turn the probe clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Rocking – Gently roll the probe to focus on one spot (also called “heel-toe”).
If you are scanning the liver:
Marker to the head = screen shows top-to-bottom image.
Marker to the right = screen shows side-to-side (left-right) view.
By knowing this, you will know where the organ is and how to move correctly.
